The misuse and addiction to opioids is a national crisis, leaving many affected, including families of addicts. Many times, those closest to the ones suffering substance abuse struggle the most. Hamilton Patient, Sheena, reflects on the moment she decided to get help with her pain pill addiction.
“In April, I lost my daughter’s dad over addiction,” Sheena states.
“We found him dead in the basement and that’s when I decided to get help for my addiction for taking pain pills because I was taking way too many and I didn’t want to take the chance of taking them, and (thinking), I could be the next one dead. So, I decided to get help at Hamilton.”
It wasn’t an easy road to recovery, but with the support of her mom, and her kids in mind, she received the help she needed and is happy to be feeling better and doing things again.
“Ever since I got help, I feel better. I’ve been doing more with my kids. I’ve been spending every minute I can with them now, making up for lost times. And now, I’m not depressed in bed, wondering how I’m going to get pain pills and (can) move around and do stuff. It feels amazing to come here to get help.”
