For Immediate Release
FLINT, MICH. (Jan. 29, 2019) – In honor of the American Heart Association’s (AHA) National Wear Red Day campaign, Hamilton Community Health Network (HCHN) employees will don red clothing and accessories with their uniforms on Friday, February 1, 2019. This is all in an effort to raise awareness about women’s heart disease. Heart disease affects one out of four women and is the leading cause of death for women in the United States according to the American Heart Association.
The American Heart Association’s Wear Red Day was established in 2002, and happens every year on the First Friday in February. It is a holiday celebrated nationally in which men and women wear the color red to raise awareness about the number one health problem that affects American women – heart disease. It’s also a day in which women are encouraged to find out their five most important health numbers: Total Cholesterol, HDL Cholesterol, Blood Sugar, Blood Pressure and BMI (Body Mass Index). By knowing these numbers women can find out their risks for developing heart disease and take measures to prevent it.
There are multiple things you can do to lower your chances of developing heart disease, including eating a healthy diet and getting 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week, according to the American Heart Association.
Hamilton Community Health Network health educator and fitness expert, Marcie Hunter, says “Make one or a few changes to your daily routine, then add more as those changes become habits. For instance, replace sugary drinks with water, eliminate tobacco usage/exposure, or if you don’t exercise, start walking around the block and increase your distance as you feel comfortable.” “As an in-home alternative, you can march in place during commercial breaks, and gradually expand exercise techniques.
”Hunter leads Hamilton’s Enhance Fitness and Cooking Matters programs that are both free for anyone to attend. Enhance Fitness is held every Tuesday at noon at the Main clinic on 2900 N. Saginaw Street in Flint, along with Cooking Matters which is also held on Tuesday afternoons, on a six week rotating basis. Call 1-810-406-4912 ext. 2530 for more information and to register.
